Overview of IT Project Management
Project management refers a set of methodologies that drive the success of a new endeavor to its completion. The exact set of methodologies utilized will vary from project to project, but the underlying foundation is always present.
Project management is a broad statement and oftentimes refers to several meanings. In one organization, project management may refer to a special project geared towards streamlining a particular process, another organization may refer to it as managing a new equipment purchase and installation, yet another organization may refer to project management as managing a new division.
Because the term project management is so broad, it’s important to define exactly what IT project management means and how it’s applied. For our purposes at Exiis Corporation, we define IT project management as follows:
“IT Project Management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques through established procedures and methodologies such as: initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and completing a project that is not considered part of the day-to-day operations of the organization. Each project undertaken shall have a clear beginning, middle, and end with a set of deliverables and expectations that are met within a preapproved budget”.
From our definition, we can focus on how we will apply our project management skills to projects that are related to Information Technology. This site is dedicated to assisting new project managers, project leads, and project stakeholders in understanding the project process and how to take advantage of a formalized process. We are also going to include articles from several project managers who work in the field, who have real-world experience, and real world advice.
